The Grooms Checklist

Twelve to Eighteen Months Before

  • Buy engagement ring and propose

  • Discuss date, hour of wedding as well as type of wedding

  • Discuss the financial wedding budget with both sets of parents

  • Book transportation (eg: limousine, horse and carriage) if a unique mode of transportation is desired, book extra early for availability

Six to Eleven Months Before

  • Choose best man and ushers (1 usher is suggested for every 50 guests)

  • Start talking with fiancé about your guest list

  • Start planning and arranging your honeymoon

  • With fiancé, meet with marriage Officiant to discuss the ceremony

Four to Five Months Before

  • Shop for wedding rings (size and engravings)

  • Complete the guest list with full names, address and phone numbers

  • Check requirements on obtaining a marriage license

  • Select and order men’s attire (with help from fiancé, of course!)

  • Finalize all honeymoon plans, reservations, flight arrangements, etc

Two to Three Months Before

  • Meet with marriage Officiant to finalize ceremony details

  • Assist parents with plans for the rehearsal dinner party

  • Discuss financial arrangements for flowers, these are traditionally the grooms responsibility

  • Find accommodations for out-of-town attendants

  • Get best man and ushers fitted for their attire

  • Apply for special occasions permit (if need one)

  • Confirm honeymoon reservations

  • Pick up wedding rings, make sure they fit well, check engraving

One Month Before

  • Purchase gifts for best man and ushers, given at rehearsal dinner

  • Purchase gift for fiancé if gifts are being exchanged

  • Break in your dress shoes by wearing thick socks in them

  • Pick up marriage license with fiancé

Two Weeks Before

  • Gather documents and marriage license

  • Arrange details for your wedding day transportation

  • If moving – change address cards at post office

One Week Before

  • Go over all details, double check your honeymoon plans

  • Have your hair cut

  • Pack for honeymoon

  • Make sure that best man and ushers know their duties

  • Go over seating arrangements with the ushers

3 Days Before

  • Purchase travelers cheques

  • Give best man the Officiants fee (sealed in an envelope)

Your Wedding Day

  • Eat a good breakfast

  • Allow yourself plenty of time to dress

  • Ensure that best man has the rings, and marriage license

One Hour Before

  • Ushers arrive at ceremony venue to place programs on the seats and pin on their boutonnieres

30 Minutes Before

  • Guest begin arriving, ushered to their seats beginning with seats directly behind those reserved for the family, grooms family on the right hand side and brides on the left

15 Minutes Before

  • The groom and the best man arrive at the ceremony venue

1 Minute Before

  • The groom and the best man stand ready at the front of the ceremony venue

The Best Man's Checklist
The Best Man has a very honored and responsible duty. He will be paired with the Maid of Honour for the day.

Assist the Groom with planning and responsibilities for the wedding
Be available for tux selection and fitting - Pay for and return your tux
Take charge of the tux fitting for the Groomsmen
Host a bachelor party for the Groom
Get hair cut week before the wedding
Write your toast for the reception and rehearse it
Picking up out-of-town guests at the airport
Run a last minute check list with the Groom
Take charge of the thank-you envelopes
Give envelopes to the recipients 
Attend the Groom on wedding day
Assist the Groom dressing
Secure the Bride's ring for presentation during the service
Ride to the Church with the Groom
Be available for the photographer
Stand next to the Groom at the front of the ceremony venue
Be a witness to all the marriage documents
Propose the first toast at the reception
Be on standby during the reception
Arrange for transportation for the happy couple after the reception
Make sure the car is full of gas
Help deposit cash wedding gifts after the wedding
Organize transportation of gifts from the reception
Pick up and return Groom's tux the next day
